Toffee, yuzu, red currant
This is the kind of Kenyan coffee we love: bright, sweet, and full of energy, but still polished enough to drink every day. Gathaithi Peaberry comes from Nyeri County, one of Kenya’s classic coffee-growing regions, where smallholder farmers deliver ripe cherry to the Gathaithi washing station for careful processing.
In the cup, it opens with a clean citrus brightness — think yuzu rather than lemon — followed by red currant, soft toffee sweetness, and a long, juicy finish. It has the lively acidity Kenyan coffees are known for, but with enough sweetness and structure to keep everything balanced.
Gathaithi Coffee Factory was established in 1967 and works with more than 1,600 smallholder members, most farming small plots with around 120 coffee trees. The coffee is grown in red volcanic soil at elevations around 1,700 meters and above. After harvest, cherries are hand-picked, sorted, pulped, fermented overnight, washed, soaked, and dried on raised beds for 7–15 days depending on the weather.
Peaberries are naturally occurring coffee seeds that develop as a single round bean inside the cherry instead of the usual two flat-sided seeds. They are often prized for their concentration and clarity, and this lot shows exactly why: vivid fruit, clean sweetness, and a crisp finish.
